Kerry-Anne and Owen’s Story:
The Beginnings of Liberty Tea Rooms

Our Vision

The vision for Liberty Tea Rooms was born from heartbreak. In 2013, Christians Against Poverty (CAP) shared a space at The Base Hemel, a lively venue filled with pool tables, a cinema, and cozy seating. It buzzed with up to ninety teenagers on Friday nights and hosted after-school clubs and mentoring during the week. While CAP typically met families in their homes, we recognized that some needed a neutral space to discuss their financial struggles away from the chaos of their lives.

One day, a distressed man arrived, desperate for help. He had lost his business, marriage, and home. In true British fashion, I made a pot of tea and listened as he shared his story of heartache. Although there was a three-month waiting list for CAP’s assistance, we assured him he was not alone in his crisis. Tragically, he never returned; just days before his appointment, we learned he had taken his own life. This heartbreaking event reinforced the urgent need for support, and I vowed that such a tragedy would not happen again on my watch.

Our Journey

Looking around the venue, it was clear it catered only to the youth. I envisioned a welcoming space for all ages, where people could find community, rest, and compassion, experiencing a moment of freedom from their burdens. The transformation began the following week, giving rise to Liberty Tea Rooms, which offered hope and support to our community from 2013 to 2014.

After two years, we found our current home in Bank Court, at the heart of town. With the support of our amazing community, we transformed a neglected old bank into a vibrant hub of Community, Hospitality, Unity, Rest, Care, and Hope. But that’s a story for another time!
